Box Score Hartford, Ct - Colby returned to the Constitution State this weekend with motivation and fuel following last weekend's close losses to Conn College and Skidmore. The Mules started the weekend with a showdown at Trinity College.
Despite a strong performance from #1 doubles pair
Jason Daly and
Jake Cohen, who defeated their Trinity opponents 6-1, the Mules failed to secure the doubles point. The Bantams won at the #2 position 6-4 and the #3 position 6-2.
The Colby Men's Tennis team found themselves in a similar position to last weekend's matches, but the team was set on not letting the same result occur. Cohen started things off strong with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win at the #1 position.
Josh Kaplan lost a marathon two-setter 7-6(6), 7-6(4) at the #5 spot, and the Mules found themselves down 1-2 in the overall dual match.
With their backs against the wall, Colby first-year
Diego Sosa displayed unbelievable determination and resiliency, coming back from a 0-5 deficit in the first set and saving three set points along the way to win 7-6(7). Sosa went on to win his match 7-6(7), 2-6, 6-4 at the #3 spot to tie the dual match up at 2-2. First-year
Marco Ziets-Segura was the next to win an epic match, defeating his Trinity opponent 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-3 at the #4 position, showcasing tremendous mental toughness.
With Colby ahead 3-2 and needing one more match to clinch their first NESCAC win of the season, first-year
Jason Daly was determined to secure the match for the Mules. Daly showed no signs of nerves, cruising past his opponent 6-3, 6-3 at the #2 position, with clutch play along the way. The Mules defeated the Bantams with a final score of 4-3, securing their first NESCAC win of the season.
Colby will look to ride this momentum into tomorrow's match against conference foe Wesleyan University.
