Facility Rules and Regulations


ALL USERS SHOULD CONSULT THEIR HEALTHCARE PROVIDER BEFORE ENGAGING IN ANY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OR EXERCISE PROGRAM


Aidan's Climbing & Bouldering Wall Regulations
  • Powdered chalk is prohibited.
  • Footwear must be worn at all times.

Aquatics Center Regulations
Patrons should first check in at the Welcome Desk at the main entrance of HAARC and then proceed to main entrance of the pool on Level 1 where a lifeguard will assign lanes and share further procedures upon arrival.
  • Swimming or use of the pool deck is prohibited unless the pool is open and college-approved lifeguards are on duty.
  • All patrons shall take a shower before entering the pool.
  • A swimsuit must be worn at all times (whether one piece or two piece). Gym shorts and other athletic attire may not be worn in the pool.
  • Do not enter the pool with a cold, skin, eye or body infection, open wound, diarrhea or any other contagious condition.
  • No spitting or blowing nose in pool.
  • Street shoes are prohibited on the deck at all times.
  • Patrons with hair longer than neck length shall have hair tied up or shall wear a cap.
  • No food is permitted on the pool deck. Water bottles or sports drinks with resealable lids are permitted on deck.
  • Glass bottles and gum are prohibited.
  • Please leave all personal belongings in the locker rooms.
  • No diving in shallow areas and where marked “NO DIVING.”
  • No running or rough play is permitted in the pools or on aquatics equipment.
  • Use of starting blocks and 1 meter diving board is at lifeguards discretion.
  • Use of 3 meter board is prohibited.
  • All training and fitness equipment are to be used in the manner for which it is designed.
  • Do not hang on or swim across lane lanes.
  • Proficient swimming ability is required as demonstrated by a minimum ability to swim 25 yards unassisted. Lifeguards may asses swim ability and remove those patrons who pose a hazard to themselves and others.
  • Children, under the age of 16, may not use pool without adult supervision.
  • Lifeguards have the responsibility to enforce regulations and have the authority to remove anyone for unsafe or inappropriate behavior.
  • All other general facility policies apply.

Boulos Family Fitness Center Regulations
  • Appropriate apparel must be worn at all times. Shirt and closed toe shoes are required. No street clothes/boots  i.e., no sandals, open-toe shoes, hard soled shoes, or jeans. No cleats in the weight room.  In the winter months, a change of shoes will be required.
  • Individual items (phones, IPods, etc) are permitted with the use of headphones.  Portable speakers are not permitted in the weight room. Music played over the speaker system is controlled by the Strength and Conditioning staff.
  • Please return all equipment to its original location when you are finished. This includes: body bars, weights, dumbbells, stability balls, jump ropes, bands/chords, steps/risers, and medicine balls. 
  • Please do not drop or slam weights. Report any broken equipment to a member of the staff immediately. 
  • No glass bottles or cans are allowed. All beverages must be in a container with a sealable lid/cap.
  • Please wipe down all equipment after each use using the provided wipes. 
  • Use of the fitness center equipment is at your own risk. 
  • Spotters are recommended for any free weight exercise performed over the head, face, neck, or chest. 
  • Patrons should use extreme caution in lifting weights to avoid potential injuries to themselves or others. 
  • Collars must be used on all barbell exercises. 
  • Do not attempt to use equipment if unfamiliar with the proper use. Please ask a member of the staff for assistance. 
  • All equipment must be used in the manner for which it was designed. Do not attempt to modify the equipment. 
  • No outside personal training service is permitted in the facility.

Field House, Indoor Tennis Court Regulations

Dimensions of Indoor Track: 
            1 Lap = 200 Meters 
            1 Mile = 8 laps  

  • Pre-running or walking exercises must be completed away from the track in the dedicated stretching area.
  • Fast traffic will be on the inside lanes.
  • When passing, please shoulder check and verbalize your intentions before passing. If being passed, please keep your pace consistent as speeding up or slowing down could be hazardous to others.
  • Free weights are prohibited on the track.Velcro or secured wrist and ankle weights are permitted.
  • Wheeled equipment is prohibited on the track, including, but not limited to, bicycles, strollers, skateboards, hoverboards, etc.
  • Do not apply tape to the floor of the track or infield area.
  • Please use locker rooms or cubbies for coats, bags, and personal items. Gym bags, jackets, and clothing cannot be left on the track area.
  • Department of Athletics staff reserves the right to refuse service to any participant and/or spectator who violates any policy or procedure or who engages in the verbal and/or physical abuse of athletic facility property or staff member.
  • Food, chewing tobacco, or illegal substances are not permitted on the track. 
  • Use of cleated or spiked footwear by non-Colby students is prohibited.

Jack Kelley Rink Regulations
  • Skating in a manner that endangers or interferes with other skaters’ safety is forbidden.
  • Roughness, excessive speeding, skating against the crowd, or weaving through other skaters is prohibited.
  • Profanity or aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.
  • Pants and long sleeves must be worn at all times while skating.  
  • Food, chewing tobacco, or illegal substances are not permitted on the ice surface or in penalty boxes and locker rooms. 
  • Skaters are not allowed to walk on areas not covered by rubber flooring while wearing skates.
  • Chipping, gouging, or kicking holes in the ice is prohibited.
  • Hockey pucks and sticks are not allowed on the ice during public skates.
  • Shooting, passing, stick handling, and use of hockey pucks/balls anywhere other than the ice surface is prohibited.
  • No one is permitted on the ice when the Zamboni is in use. 
  • No tag or chasing games of any kind are permitted on the ice.
  • No persons are allowed to sit on, lean over, or leave articles on the dasher boards.
  • All coaches and athletes are responsible for ensuring that all trash has been removed from the locker rooms after each use. 
  • Department of Athletics staff reserves the right to refuse service to any participant and/or spectator who violates any policy or procedure or who engages in verbal and/or physical abuse of athletic facility property or staff member.
  • Rink programming during the academic semesters:

Margaret M. Crook Center Regulations
  • Appropriate athletic apparel must be worn at all times. Shirts and shoes are required i.e., no boots, sandals, open toed shoes, or hard soled shoes should be worn on the court. In the winter months, a change of shoes is required to utilize the space to prevent salt from coming onto the court.
  • All personal belongings should be left in a locker room or a day locker.
  • For personal safety, there is no dunking, slapping of backboards, grabbing or hanging on the basketball rims and nets (including volleyball).
  • The only tape that should be applied to the courts is SURE Tape, and should only be left on the courts for 24 hours (Painter’s tape, gaffers’ tape, or any other tape should not be applied to the courts).
  • Gum, Candy and food are prohibited on the court.
  • Spitting on the courts is prohibited.
  • Drinks in resealable containers are permitted. Glass containers are prohibited.
  • Bleachers are not to be climbed upon when in the closed position.
  • Hockey sticks of any type are prohibited on the court.
  • Lacrosse balls are prohibited in the gymnasium as they mark the floor (please utilize the wall ball in the field house).
  • Wheeled equipment is prohibited in the gym including, but not limited to, bicycles, skateboards, hoverboards, roller skates/rollerblades, etc.
  • Portable speakers are discouraged, music may be listened to via headphones. Varsity athletic events and supervised recreational activities will be permitted to access the facilities sound system.
  • Profanity, fighting or inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.

Squash Court Regulations
  • Black soled sneakers and outdoor shoes are strictly prohibited on the courts (please ensure that your shoes are non-marking).
  • Only specific squash rackets and squash balls are allowed on the courts.
  • It is highly recommended that protective eyewear is worn during play.
  • Doors must be closed during all activity.
  • Singles Squash courts are intended for 1 player versus 1 player (maximum of 2 on the court at once).
  • No food or drinks are allowed on the courts. Chewing gum is also prohibited when using the courts.
  • Skateboards, hoverboards, roller skates/rollerblades, scooters are prohibited on the courts.
  • Users should conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, and refrain from yelling or using profanity, and slamming or throwing racquets against the court or walls.

The policies of all Harold Aflond Athletics and Recreation Center venues have been developed to maintain the facility and equipment in good condition and to assure your safety while using the facilities. Use of the Harold Alfond Athletics and Recreation Center is a privilege. Failure to comply with policies and directions of the staff governing participation, equipment and/or conduct may result in suspension from the facility and/or its programs.
