Lewiston, Maine - After dropping a tightly contested doubles point, the Colby Men's Tennis team stormed back in singles play to earn a 5-2 NESCAC victory over Bates College on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Mules to 4-5 overall (2-1 in conference play) while the Bobcats drop to 3-8.
The afternoon began at the Wallach Tennis Center with the Bobcats seizing early momentum. Bates claimed victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions to lock up the opening point. Colby's lone doubles win came in a marathon battle at the No. 3 spot, where
Diego Sosa and
Bilal Asim showed immense poise to outlast their opponents in a 7-6 tiebreaker.
Despite the 1-0 deficit, the Mules remained composed as the match moved into singles.
Jason Daly set the tone at the top of the ladder, battling through a three-set seesaw match to defeat his opponent 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. That victory sparked a dominant run across the middle of the lineup, as
Diego Sosa (6-3, 6-3) and
Bilal Asim (6-4, 7-5) both secured straight-set wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions, respectively.
The most grueling matches of the day took place at the bottom of the lineup, where the Mules displayed significant grit. At No. 5 singles,
Antonio Lee outlasted Nicolas Ozer in a marathon first-set tiebreaker 7-6, before cruising to a 6-1 win in the second set to clinch the team victory.
Marco Ziets-Segura finalized the scoring at No. 6, recovering from a first-set tiebreak loss to win 6-7, 6-3, 7-5 in the final match on court.
Colby returns home to Mayflower Hill this weekend for a pair of NESCAC matchups facing Wesleyan Saturday and Conn. College Sunday.
