Orlando, FL - The Colby Men's Tennis team rounded off its spring break trip in the Sunshine State on Thursday afternoon in a showdown against Luther College. The match was the last of three that the Mules played on their trip, with all three hosted at the USTA National Campus.
The Mules came out strong in doubles at the #3 position, with senior captain
Josh Kaplan and first-year
Diego Sosa teaming up to defeat their opponents 6-1 in dominant fashion, for the second straight dual match. Senior captain
Jake Cohen and first-year
Jason Daly clinched the doubles point for the Mules at the #1 spot with a convincing 6-2 victory against tricky opponents.
Colby continued its momentum into singles play. Cohen was the first to finish, winning his match in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 at the #1 position, showcasing tremendous power from his forehand. Daly followed with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the #2 spot, fending off a near comeback from his opponent in the second set. After Luther secured their first point at the #4 position, it was down to the #3, #5, and #6 positions to decide the match, with the Mules just needing one more match to secure victory.
First-year
Matthew Jeong, just making his second-ever start for Colby, did it. With clutch play and mental toughness, Jeong picked up his first dual match victory of his young Colby career, clinching the match for the Mules, 7-5, 2-6, 1-0(6) at the #6 spot. Kaplan added to Colby's victory with a hard-fought win at the #5 spot, winning 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(8), utilizing tremendous return play.
Overall, Colby won the dual match against Luther by a score of 5-2, extending its win streak to four straight matches. With this win, the Mules also finished their spring break trip undefeated, giving the team confidence as they head back to Maine. The Mules will look to carry this momentum into NESCAC play next weekend, where they will host Williams on Saturday, April 5th.Â
