Box Score Waterville, Maine- Colby Men's Tennis kicked off their fall campaign in Middlebury, VT at the Middlebury Invitational. Colby sent eight players to the tournament to compete across four flights of singles and two flights of doubles. The event hosted Colby, Bates, Tufts, Middlebury, RPI, Skidmore and Brandeis.
In the A flight singles, junior captain Joey Barrett took down Sergiu Celebidachi of Skidmore 6-4, 6-1. Barrett came up just short in the next round to eventual champion Rishabh Sharda of Tufts by a score of 7-5, 6-2.
Colby freshman
Aidan Kwong made his collegiate debut in style, taking out Nick Forester of Bates 7-5, 6-4 before falling to Tufts' Alex Ganchev, who went on to win the B singles flight 6-2, 6-0. Senior captain
Jan Wenger made a run to the semifinals of the B draw with a close win over Abraham Yohannes of RPI 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-6 and a convincing victory over Bates junior Alex Gujarathi. Wenger was defeated in the semifinals 6-4, 6-3 by Simon Kauppila of Brandeis.
In the C singles flight, sophomore
James Bogdanovic had a tight battle with Hunter Levine of Brandeis, but came up just short in the final match tiebreak 3-6, 6-2, 10-5.
Senior captain
Josh Fleishman advanced to the finals of the D singles flight. Fleishman defeated Andrew Mueller of Middlebury 7-6(6), 6-3 and Brandeis' Aryan Nijhawan 0-6, 7-5, 10-8 before falling to Lachie Macintosh of Tufts 6-2, 6-3 in the finals.
In the A doubles flight, the duo of Bogdanovic and Barrett eliminated Cam Kania and Gujarathi of Bates 8-5 but were defeated by the RPI tandem of Aidan Drover-Mattinen and Andy Zhu 8-3.
The Mules travel to Bowdoin this weekend to continue their fall season at the New England ITA Regional Tournament.
