Waterville, Maine - Welcome to Colby Athletics' summer spotlight series, where we take a look into what Colby student-athletes are working on over the summer break. Up next we have rising junior
Will Soloway of Colby Men's Ice Hockey.
This summer Will has been working as a Hockey Operations Intern for the Princeton University Men's Ice Hockey team. He works directly with Head Coach Ben Syer and Assistant Coaches Dan Henningson, Shane Talarico, and Connor Jones on a variety of projects to help prepare the team for the upcoming season. Will's responsibilities include video breakdowns of Princeton's play, analyzing professional teams that the staff aims to model aspects of their game after, scouting potential recruits, and using advanced data analytics to identify weaknesses from last season. The goal is to find areas where the team can improve systematically and in player development. After Will completes each project, he sits down with the coaches to review the presentations and discuss his findings.
"Being able to talk through, learn, and debate ideas with such experienced hockey minds has been extremely rewarding," stated Soloway. "I've been so impressed by the level of detail and depth in their work, especially in the offseason. In just my first month working here, I've learned a tremendous amount about what it takes to build a successful hockey program."
"Getting to work in the offices of the Hobey Baker Memorial Rink has been an incredible honor. Baker Rink is the oldest Division I college hockey arena still in use and being surrounded by that history is a constant reminder of the hard work, commitment, and sacrifice it takes to succeed in this sport and in life."

"As I'm still currently playing college hockey, I hope to bring a unique, valuable perspective to the coaching, scouting, and analytical side of the game. Being on both sides at the same time has helped me think about what are the most effective ways to connect, understand, and communicate information being passed from coaches to players. I also believe that watching hockey from a coaching point of view will really help me when I'm back on the ice this fall with the Colby Men's Ice Hockey team as we pursue our goal of adding championship banners to the Jack Kelley Rink."
