Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team faced the Jumbos of Tufts University on Friday evening. While each team found two goals each after 60 minutes, the Mules came away with the win in overtime, their second win over the Jumbos this season. The Mules now stand 10-11-2 overall and 6-10-1 in the NESCAC.
In a scoreless first period, Colby and Tufts both came out strong with nine and eight shots on net, respectively. and a power play opportunity each. In the second period, the Mules opened up the scoring with a goal off a rebound from sophomore
Wyatt Schmidek, his second of the season, assisted by
James Tepper and
Bobby Landry at 16:40. Despite an effort by the Mules to hold onto their lead, the Jumbos fought back and tied the game with 0.6 seconds to play in the second.
In the third period, sophomore Will Solloway found the back of the net, assisted by Schmidek and
Tyler Crist, at 7:18 to push the Mules ahead 2-1. Despite Colby's effort, Tufts fought back hard and tied the game once again just 30 seconds later. While the two teams were very evenly matched in the third period, the game remained tied at 2-2 after 60 minutes.
In the five-minute 3v3 overtime period, sophomore
Massimo Gentile and
Colby Browne found a 2v1 opportunity against the Jumbos, and Gentile put the game away, scoring his sixth goal of the season, at 0:55. Sophomore
Cooper Rautenstrauch recorded 25 saves for his second overtime win of the season.
The Mules play again Saturday at home against Connecticut College at 3pm for their senior day celebration.
