Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Colby Loses to Connecticut in Season Finale

Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Men's Ice Hockey team faced the Camels of Connecticut College on Saturday afternoon. Connecticut took their lead early and Colby fought until the 60th minute, but their effort wasn't enough as the Camels finished with a 5-2 win. The Mules finished their season 10-12-2 overall and 6-11-1 in the NESCAC.

The Camels opened up the scoring early in the first, taking a 1-0 lead just 30 seconds in. Connecticut out shot the Mules nine to six, while each team had a man-up opportunity in the period. In the second period, Connecticut opened up the scoring once again at 0:33, taking a 2-0 lead. Senior Reese Farrell found the back of the net for the Mules, assisted by Riley Rosenthal and Matthew MacDonald, for his third of the season at 3:48. While Colby dominated the second period, out shooting the Camels 14 to eight, Connecticut scored once again, taking a 3-1 lead at 17:12.

The Mules came out strong in the final period, as sophomore Colby Browne cut Connecticut's lead in half with his 18th goal of the season, assisted by Dan Juzych, with ten minutes left to play in the game. Colby made a final effort to tie the game and extend their season into the playoffs with an extra skater on the ice, but the Camels capitalized and scored on the empty net. Less than ten seconds later they scored one final goal, making it a 5-2 win over the Mules. Senior Adam Costley recorded 19 saves through 60 minutes.

As the last game of the regular season, the Mules will not move on to the NESCAC tournament; however, this season marks a lot of success for the Mules. Browne scored a career-high 18 goals and ten assists, currently leading the NESCA in goals and shots with a total of 94. Sophomore goaltender Cooper Rautenstrauch recorded 576 saves throughout the season, ranked second in the NESCAC for saves per game with an average of 30.32. The young players on the team show lots of promise for next season: Massimo Gentile, Will Soloway, and Wyatt Schmidek. Current juniors MacDonald and Jayden Grier have been crucial players both offensively and defensively this year and will be stepping up into their senior leadership roles next season.
