Colby Starts 2024-25 Campaign at Middlebury

Box Score

Middlebury, Vt. - The Colby Men's Tennis team began their 2024-25 fall campaign at the Middlebury Invitational. Colby sent ten players to the tournament to compete across three flights of singles and two flights of doubles. The event hosted Colby, Bates, Middlebury, RPI, Skidmore, and Brandeis.

Colby freshman Jason Daly had a great debut to his collegiate career. Pairing up with senior James Bogdanovic, the duo received a bye to the second round in the B Flight doubles. In their first match, they took down Middlebury opponents in a thrilling encounter, winning 8-7 (3). They then fell to Brandeis opponents 7-8 (6) in a back-and-forth affair. Daly picked up his first win of many at the collegiate level in the B Flight singles as well. Showing tremendous physical and mental strength, the first year defeated his RPI opponent 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (8). He was then forced to retire in his second round match against his Brandeis opponent mid-way through the second set due to injury.

In the A Flight doubles, sophomore Paul Dandler paired up with first-year Diego Sosa. The duo picked up an impressive 8-3 victory against Bates opponents in the first round before falling to Middlebury opponents and the #2 seeds in the quarterfinals. First-year Marco Ziets-Segura also began his college career this weekend, pairing up with senior captain Jake Cohen. The tandem received a bye into the quarterfinals before losing a tight battle 7-8 (4). The pair bounced back nicely on Sunday, defeating Bates opponents 8-7 (4) and Skidmore opponents 8-4 in consolation rounds.

Senior captain Josh Kaplan also had an impressive showing in the C Flight consolation. Kaplan, despite dealing with a shoulder injury that forced him to serve underhand throughout the tournament, showed grit and determination to defeat his Bates opponent 7-5, 6-1. Kaplan then fell to another Bates opponent in his last match of the weekend.

First-year Jason Daly commented on the weekend saying, "It was a lot of fun competing. I loved the team energy and support I got from everyone. I hope we can keep the same energy for the rest of the season."

The Mules travel to Tufts on Friday, September 27 to continue their fall season at the New England ITA Regional Tournament.
