Waterville, ME - The Colby College Men's Tennis Team defeated visiting Trinity College by a score of 8-1 on Sunday, April 10th. The Mules were ready for a fight since the Bantams have had a successful season thus far. Colby started out very strong in the doubles, with Sam Henry and Max Schuermann winning in a swift 8-3 victory at the #2 position to give the Mules their first point. With Trinity taking a doubles point in a close tiebreaker at the #3 position, the #1 duo of Joey Barrett and Jake Cohen came up huge for the Mules with a 8-4 win in their match to give Colby the coveted 2-1 lead after the doubles. 

In the singles, Cohen was the first to finish in a clinical 6-2, 6-0 win at the #3 position to push the Mules up to 3-1. Schuermann pushed the Mules within one point of victory with a 6-4, 6-0 win at #4 singles. Despite the lead, the momentum was not clear on either side, as Barrett, Jan Wenger, and Ben Powis were headed into third set 10-point tiebreaks and Henry's second set becoming a tight battle. Henry then came up big after a marathon final game to clinch the match for the Mules with a 6-0, 6-4 win at the #5 position. 

Colby's third set success rate dramatically improved today, with the remaining 3 matches going to the Mules. Barrett recovered after a first set loss to roll in the second set and snag the victory with a 10-7 win in the third set 10-point tiebreak. Wenger recovered from a second set loss to win 10-6 in the 10-point tiebreak, deflecting and smartly absorbing his opponent's immensely powerful serves and forehands to get the win. Powis had a standout performance at #6 singles, recovering from 4-6, 2-5 to win 4-6, 7-5, 10-0 in what was an outstanding and quite inspirational comeback to end the match with an 8-1 victory.
