Brunswick, Maine – The Colby College Men's Tennis Team selected 6 players to compete at the ITA New England Regional Championships hosted at Bowdoin College this weekend (September 24-25). The tournament, which pits the best of New England teams against each other was the first in which Colby was able to send more than 2 players. The Mules ranking has skyrocketed to #8 in the region, allowing them to send more players than ever to the biggest tournament of the Fall season. Colby's rise in the rankings was exemplified in the draw seedings as well, with Sophomore Joey Barrett snagging the 7th seed in singles and the 5th seed in doubles with Freshman Jake Cohen.
Leading off day one was a marathon doubles win 8-7(13-11) for Sophomore Sam Henry and Senior Max Schuermann against a team from Williams, saving three match points in the process. Henry and Schuermann dropped a close match to Tufts in the round of 32. Henry also scored a key singles win against a top Bates player to advance to the round of 32. Freshmen James Bogdanovic and Sriram Das entered into the doubles draw and fought bravely, but dropped the match to a team from Tufts.
Freshman Jake Cohen continued his outstanding fall season with a singles upset in the first round over the 6 th seed from Brandeis. He then beat a Bowdoin player to enter into the Round of 16, where he lost in a tight two-set tussle to a player from Amherst.
Barrett and Cohen also made the round of 16 in doubles a win over Babson. In an even bigger marathon than Henry and Schuermann's doubles match, Barrett and Cohen played incredible tennis and displayed tremendous fight, but dropped their match to Middlebury 8-7(14-12).
The Mules next play at Bates for the Wallach Invitational from October 8th-10th. With strong performances so far from the Mules, this will not be a tournament a Colby Tennis fan will want to miss. Check in on the Colby Tennis Twitter for match updates and possible live streaming links.
