No. 17 Colby Battles Past Smith in Three Tight Sets

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—  No. 17 Colby opened the Smith College Tournament with a sweep of host Smith (6–3), taking three overtime sets 33–31, 26–24, and 28–26 inside Ainsworth Gymnasium. The Mules extended their winning streak to seven and remain unbeaten.

Set one was a marathon. After trading long runs, Colby fended off multiple set points and finally closed it, 33–31, on rallies that featured a Jordan Lee ace plus kills from LJ Grant and Brady Moseley. The second frame followed a similar script: Smith carved out small cushions, but the Mules steadied in the high-20s as Moseley's terminal swings and clean first contacts pushed Colby over the line, 26–24. The third set showcased the night's best volleyball, with long rallies and both setters spreading the floor. Smith pressed to the brink of a fourth, but Colby sprinted through, sparked by a disciplined block from Cyanne Jones to slow a right-side swing, a high-hands winner by Grant, and Moseley's cross-court attack to seal a 28–26 clincher.

Moseley paced Colby's attack with 13 kills, followed by Grant with 10 and Marjorie Johnson with six. Setter Gabby Grujic rallied 24 assists, followed by Lee with 14, orchestrating a balanced offense. From the line, Lee and Reese Loyd each delivered two aces, and Jones led the block with three. Defensively, Loyd anchored the floor with 16 digs, while Moseley added eight and Grujic six. Team-wise, Colby finished with 46 kills, five aces, five blocks, 42 assists, and 42 digs at .164, while Smith tallied 37 kills, nine aces, eight blocks, 36 assists, and 41 digs at .224.

Colby Volleyball continues their weekend tournament with a 2:00 p.m. match against UMass Dartmouth, followed by a 4:00 p.m. game versus Babson.
