Men’s Second Varsity Four takes Bronze Medal at New England Rowing Championships

Worcester, Mass.-  The Colby Crew team traveled to Worcester, Massachusetts for the 2023 New England Rowing Championships this past weekend.  The Mules faced some of their toughest competition of the year and were up to the task with hard fought races and strong results across the board.  The Men's Varsity 8 placed 3rd in the Petit Final and 9th overall, despite dealing with illness that interrupted much of the previous week's training.  The crew looks to be in a strong position as they prepare for next week's NIRC races.  The Men's Second Varsity 4 provided the top results of the day, placing 3rd in the Grand Final (3rd overall).  They battled a persistent UNH squad before pulling away in the final 500m to secure the bronze medal.

The Women's Varsity 8 faced an incredibly tight competition, with just 9 seconds separating some 17 crews from each other.  They placed 6th in the 3rd Level Final with a time of 6:57.2, only 9 seconds behind the 3rdplace overall Bates squad (ranked 4th in the country), and 6 seconds closer than a week previously at the President's Cup.  The Women's Second Varsity 8 provided one of the most exciting finishes of the day.  In sixth place with 500m to go, the team put on an impressive sprint to surge ahead of Mt. Holyoke and Connecticut College, and challenge UVM to the line.  Ultimately, the team finished 3rd in the 3rd Level Final, just 1.5 seconds behind UVM and a full 15 seconds faster than their morning heat.
