Waterville, Maine - Colby Men's Tennis took a hard-fought 6-3 win over Bates College at the Wallach Tennis Center on Sunday May 1st . Starting off in doubles, Junior
Max Schuermann and Freshman
Sam Henry took the first point for the Mules at #3 doubles with an 8-4 win. The #1 doubles duo of Sophomore
Jan Wenger and Freshmen
Joey Barrett soon followed up with an 8-5 win over an inspired Bates duo and energetic Bobcats fans. The Mules finished 2-1 up in doubles after the Bobcats took #2 doubles.

Heading into the singles, the Mules generated big momentum with Senior
Sumukh Pathi (pictured left) dominating his opponent at #4 singles with the loss of only one game. Pathi has been rock solid all season long, winning his singles every time he has taken the court. Barrett followed up with a clinical performance at #2 singles. With the Mules up 4-1 in the match score, the Bobcats raised their level with Wenger and Senior
Garrett Reiter heading into third set tiebreaks and Schuermann's second set becoming tighter. The big moment of the match came when Wenger smashed a midcourt overhead for a winner at 9-8 in the tiebreak to clinch the match for the Mules.
The match marked the end of the regular season for Seniors Pathi, Reiter,
Peter Messenger and
Hans Hwang. All four players raised the Colby Tennis program to new heights over the past 4 years, with the Mules landing increasing regional and national rankings as well as strong performances at ITA selectional events during their time at Colby. With today's match as an example of Colby's rise, this was the first time in over 5 years that Men's Tennis defeated rival Bates. Their passion for the program and positive energy has made a huge impression on the current team members. Their legacy and love for the game will inspire new Mules for years to come.
