Whitmyer has 10 saves for field hockey in setback to No. 8 Tufts

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Despite 10 saves from Colby College goalkeeper Riley Whitmyer, Beth Krikorian scored off a penalty corner and Hanaa Malik added an insurance goal in the second half to lift eighth-ranked Tufts University to a 2-0 NESCAC field hockey win on Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.
 
The Jumbos were playing their season opener, while Colby fell to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the NESCAC.
 
Beth Krikorian scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal at 14:24 of the first half off a penalty corner. Marguerite Salamone took the corner and went directly to Krikorian, who ripped a low shot that skidded into the back of the cage.
 
Malik scored in front in the second half to give the Jumbos a two-goal margin.
 
Emily Polinski stopped two shots for the Tufts shutout, while Riley Whitmyer kept her team in the game with 10 saves.
 
Georgia Cassidy had three of Colby's four shots.
