Waterville, Maine — Colby delivered a statement win over fellow Maine NESCAC Bates College on Tuesday, shutting out the Bobcats, 2-0, at Bill Alfond Field. The Mules came through in a rivalry match up with timely scoring and a determined defensive effort, keeping Bates off the scoreboard to secure the victory.
Colby struck first when Ruth Collins found the back of the cage off an assist from Abby Morrill, giving the Mules an early lead and setting the tone for the contest. Collins' goal, her sixth of the season, gave Colby the momentum as the team looked to establish control against its rival.
With the game still within reach, Colby continued to battle on both ends of the field, refusing to let Bates build momentum. The Mules' defense stood strong throughout the match up, limiting the Bobcat's shots and goalkeeper Ginna Jacoby making 11 saves.
Christina Sweeney provided the decisive insurance goal late in the fourth period, finishing a pass from Maddie Campbell to put Colby ahead by two. Sweeney's seventh goal of the season gave the Mules breathing room in the closing minutes and helped seal the rivalry victory.
Colby's combination of clutch scoring and a disciplined defensive performance proved too much for Bates to overcome. The Mules walked away with a 2-0 shutout, closing out the contest with a strong performance on home turf.
The Mules move on to the first round of NESCACS on October 31, traveling to face Tufts University at 1 pm.
