WATERVILLE, Maine -- Paige Hanssen (Earlysville, Va./Computer Science) had 20 kills and the Colby College volleyball team hit .650 in the opening set on the way to a 3-0 victory over University of Maine at Presque Isle on Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Colby won by set scores of 25-8, 25-12, 25-22.
By the numbers
* Hanssen, who leads the NESCAC with 146 total kills, hit .533 for the match and added two blocks.
* Natalie Simonton (Scarborough, Maine), Nicole Petherbridge (Tewksbury, Mass./Math Science), and Simone Sears (Hebron, Conn./Economics) all had four kills. Sears led the Mules (4-7 overall) with three blocks, while Molly Manuel (Andover, Mass./Math Science and Economics) had 30 assists. Erin Maidman (Ventura, Calif./Philosophy and Math) led in digs with nine and Simonton added eight. Elizabeth Middlebrook (Ridgefield, Conn./Economics) had two aces along with Simonton, Petherbridge, and Sears.
* Miranda Washinawatock (Shawano, Wis.) led UMPI (7-6 overall) with four kills.
Match highlights
* Colby opened up a 9-1 lead in the first set and extended the margin to 15-3. The Mules had 14 kills in the set and made just one attack error.
* After the Mules took a 6-1 lead in the second set, the Owls battled back to cut the margin to 11-8. Colby, however, scored the next seven points to go up 18-8.
* UMPI led for most of the third set and had a 17-13 lead before the Mules stormed back. Colby scored six straight points -- including three kills by Hanssen, a kill by Simonton, and an ace from Middlebrook - to take the lead. The Owls tied the set at 21-21, but Colby scored four of the next five points.
