Bedell wins 1,000 freestyle for men's swim team in season opener

AMHERST, Mass. -- Ryan Bedell started the season off strong by winning the 1,000-yard freestyle for the Colby College men's swimming and diving team against Amherst College on Saturday.

Bedell had a time of 10 minutes, 1.63 seconds, while teammate Andrew Healy took third place. Bedell also had thirds in the 500 freestyle (4:52.59) and 200 individual medley (2:04.15).
 
Xander Geiersbach was second in both the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 53.55 and 1:55.62, and anchored the second place 400 freestyle relay team. First-year Darrel Choi took second place in the 200 butterfly (1:57.39) and classmate Max Babej was runner-up in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.98). 
 
Babej also had a third in the 100 breaststroke (59.94). Other thirds for the Mules included: John Connors in both the 200 freestyle (1:46.28) and 100 freestyle (48.84), Travers Losert in 1-meter (215.26) and 3-meter diving (219.44), and Jake Gray in the 50 freestyle (22.03).
 
Gray, Wyatt Fritz, Connors, and Geiersbach joined forces to take second in the 400 freestyle relay (3:15.57).
 
Amherst took a 165-123 victory over the Mules.
