WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Colby College men's soccer team will keep the Elm City Bowl trophy for another season after Asa Berolzheimer had a goal and an assist in the Mules' 3-1 win over local rival Thomas College on Tuesday.
Colby (1-1 overall) was playing its first game on the new Colby Soccer Field. A good crowd enjoyed 80 degree weather.
Game highlights
* Berolzheimer (pictured) scored his first collegiate goal at 25:02 of the first half with some good hustle. Thomas took a goal kick that junior Lucas Pereira won in the air for the Mules. Berolzheimer ran hard to win a 50-50 ball with a Terrier defender, took a few dribbles, and ripped a low shot into the left corner of the goal.
* Colby's Kyle Douglas hit the right goal post and had another shot hit the crossbar in the opening half.
* With just a 1-0 halftime lead, Colby added an insurance goal at 57:49. Berolzheimer had the ball near the line close to the left post and pushed a short pass to Jeff Rosenberg, who tapped the ball in the goal for a 2-0 margin.
* A dangerous kick in the penalty area by Colby gave Thomas (2-3 overall) an indirect kick from about 15 yards out. The Terriers executed well when DJ Nicholas gently touched the ball to first-year Zenawi Bowen, who put a low shot in the right corner of the goal with just 8:04 to play.
* The Terriers did manage some pressure in the final eight minutes, but Colby closed out the scoring with just 0.6 seconds remaining. Douglas won a ball on the left side and pushed a pass across to Lucas Pereira, who was wide open and beat the clock with the shot.
By the numbers
* Junior goalie Dan Carlson made two saves in the first half and earned his first collegiate victory while playing 68:15. Avery Gibson played the final 21:45 in goal for the Mules.
* Jonathan Dutka stopped one shot for Thomas in the first half and John Villanueva made three stops in the second half.
* The Mules had a 22-5 advantage in shots and a 5-4 margin in corner kicks. The Terriers had all four of their corner kicks in the second half.
Next on the schedule
* Colby will play its first NESCAC game on the new field against Williams College on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
* The Terriers will host Husson University at 1 p.m. Saturday.
