WATERVILLE, Maine -- Haley Driscoll scored 20 points and Sarah Hancock had key plays in the closing seconds to help the Colby College women's basketball team to a 52-48 season-opening win over University of Massachusetts at Boston at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth Tournament on Friday.
The Mules take on UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday at 2 p.m. in what is now the championship game. The contest was scheduled ahead of time so the two UMass teams would not play each other. UMass-Dartmouth took a 103-24 win over Rivier in the other game.
How it happened
* The Beacons took a 34-33 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Mules (1-0) scored 19 points in the final 10 minutes to pull out the win.
* The game was tied 44-44 after UMass-Boston nailed a 3-point shot with 1:42 to play. Colby answered back when Driscoll scored inside off a pass from Katie McCrum. After the Beacons tied the game again at 46, Driscoll put the Mules ahead for good with two free throws with 47 seconds remaining.
* McCrum, who went 4-for-4 from the foul line, hit two free throws with 41 seconds remaining after UMass-Boston failed to tie the game.
* Lydia Vital kept the Beacons in the game with a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining to cut the margin to 50-48. Hancock hit one free throw with five seconds remaining and then pulled down the rebound off the Beacons' missed 3-point shot. Hancock hit one more free throw with about one second to play.
By the numbers
* While Driscoll led all scorers with 20 points on 7-for-8 shooting, Colby also received double figure scoring from Ainsley Burns (12 points). McCrum and first-year guard Emma LaCascia both had six points.
* Emily Davis led Colby in rebounding with six, while Paige Russell (pictured) finished with a game-high four assists. Davis also had two assists, two steals, and blocked a shot.
* Joie Grassi led all Beacon scorers with 13, despite playing only 16 minutes due to foul problems.
* The Beacons took a 55-49 win over the Mules at Colby last year. The Mules were 7-for-10 from the foul line in that game, but were 14-for-21 on Friday.
