Football team falls at home to Amherst

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Amherst College football team had two big special teams plays in the second half to pull away for a 40-7 victory over Colby College on Saturday at Harold Alfond Stadium.

The Mammoths improve to 4-1 overall, while the Mules drop to 0-5.
 
Game highlights
* Amherst took a 13-0 lead into the second half and then scored two of its three touchdowns in the third quarter on special teams play.
 
* Tristan Andrzej had the first big special teams highlight when he blocked a punt and returned the ball 11 yards for the touchdown with 8:13 left in the third quarter for a 20-0 lead.
 
* The Mammoths went 86 yards on seven plays to go up 27-0 on a 28-yard scoring strike from Ollie Eberth to Craig Carmilani with 3:19 remaining. Eberth rolled to his right and threw the ball toward the back of the end zone to a diving Carmilani for the score.
 
* Amherst forced a Colby punt and returner Nate Tyrell went 53 yards for the score and a 34-0 lead. Tyrell caught the ball in the middle of the field and quickly got out to the left sideline in front of his own bench on the way to the score.
 
* The Mules had their score with 13:34 left in the fourth quarter on a 14-yard scoring pass from Jack O'Brien to Jibri Woods, who had his first collegiate touchdown. Woods caught the ball in the left side of the end zone.
 
* Amherst's defense scored the final touchdown of the game on a 3-yard interception return by Joe Kelly with just 35 seconds to play.
 
* The Mammoths' John Rak had the lone points of the first quarter with a 32-yard field goal on a 74 yard, 11-play drive.
 
* Rak kicked his second field goal of the game on the first play of the second quarter from 27 yards for a 6-0 lead.
 
* The Mammoths took a 13-0 lead at the break when Reece Foy hooked up with James O'Regan on a 22-yard scoring pass in the second quarter. Foy rolled right and had no receivers open on the play. O'Regan did a nice job of getting toward the sideline in the end zone and came up with a terrific catch while getting at least one foot down.
 
Next on the schedule
* Amherst will get a home showdown with Wesleyan University next Saturday at 1 p.m.
 
* Colby heads to Hamilton College for a 1 p.m. start.
