Mules Defense Forces Three Turnovers in Road Battle Against Wesleyan

Middletown, Conn. — The Colby College football team delivered a strong defensive effort Saturday afternoon, forcing three turnovers and keeping the game within reach before falling 21-7 to undefeated Wesleyan.

Wesleyan opened the scoring with a first quarter touchdown and added another in the second to take a 14-0 lead into halftime. Despite the early deficit, Colby's defense continued to battle, preventing the Cardinals from adding to their lead throughout the third quarter.

The Mules' defense was highlighted by interceptions from Drew Ramos, Ameer White, and Nicholas Cox. Cox provided a crucial fourth quarter momentum shift, intercepting a pass and returning it 36 yards to the Wesleyan 49 yard line. Lincoln Merrill led Colby with 15 total tackles, while Aidan Cole added 11 tackles and a sack. Owen Haight contributed two sacks as the Mules recorded nine tackles for loss.

Colby capitalized on Cox's interception with a six play, 49 yard touchdown drive. Quarterback Jagger Matera connected with Sean Trinder for a four yard touchdown pass, cutting Wesleyan's lead to 14-7 with 5:19 remaining. Matera finished with 64 passing yards, while Trinder led the Mules with four receptions for 35 yards.

Wesleyan responded with a 69 yard touchdown pass to extend its lead to 21-7, securing the victory.

Colby returns home to face Amherst College on Saturday, October 17, at 1:00 p.m. in Waterville, Maine.
