Colby Falls 19-7 Against Williams Despite Strong Defensive Effort

Waterville, Maine — Colby Football fell to Williams 19-7 on Saturday afternoon at Harold Alfond Stadium. The Mules opened the game with an impressive 76 yard touchdown drive but were held off the scoreboard over the final three quarters.

Colby struck first on its opening possession, moving 76 yards in seven plays. Quarterback Stephen Gill connected with Jack Nye for a 17 yard touchdown, and Avi Gotshalk added the extra point to give the Mules an early 7-0 advantage.

The Mules defense kept the game close throughout the first half. Caleb Parsons Gomes intercepted Williams quarterback Owen McHugh late in the second quarter, while Oliver Knight blocked a 45 yard field goal attempt just before halftime to keep the score tied 7-7.

Colby remained within one possession through most of the second half after Williams took a 13-7 lead in the third quarter. Colby recorded two sacks and held the Ephs to just 53 passing yards, but Williams controlled the ground game with 230 rushing yards and added a late touchdown to extend the lead.

Colby quarterback Stephen Gill finished 17 of 26 for 168 yards and a touchdown, while Nye led the Mules with nine receptions for 90 yards and a score. The Mules put together a late 72 yard drive that reached the Williams three yard line before time expired, closing out the 19-7 final.

The Mules return to action on Saturday, October 3, when they travel to Middlebury College for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Youngman Field at Alumni Stadium. Colby will look to bounce back and avenge last season's tough loss to the Panthers. The road matchup gives the Mules another opportunity to build momentum as they continue NESCAC play.
