Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Baseball team showcased immense grit in a Saturday twin bill, battling through a twelve-inning marathon against the Bantams of Trinity College in the opener and mounting a late-inning comeback attempt in the nightcap.
Game One: Trinity 4, Colby 3 (12 Innings)
In a marathon opener that stretched to 12 innings, the Mules fell just short despite a resilient performance at Coombs Field. Trinity took an early 2-0 lead, but Colby surged ahead in the fourth inning when
Will Burns cleared the fences with a three-run home run to right field, bringing home
Tony Silva and
Myles Gythfeldt.
The Mules' pitching staff kept the game within reach for over four hours.
Matt Higgins struck out five in his start, while
Matt Mahoney provided a massive relief effort, throwing 6.2 innings and allowing zero earned runs. The defense held firm until the 12th, when Trinity finally broke the 3-3 deadlock with an RBI double. Colby's offense out-hit Trinity 12-11 in the effort, led by a 3-for-6 performance from Burns and multi-hit games from
Duncan Cullinane and
Sam Nigro.
Game Two: Trinity 7, Colby 4
The nightcap saw the Mules battle back from a difficult opening frame. After Trinity put up five runs in the top of the first,
Keeler Vogt took over on the mound and silenced the opposition for four straight innings, striking out four and allowing only one hit to stabilize the game.
Colby began the comeback effort in the third inning when
Corey Aubuchon singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice by
Patrick Shrake. The power bats returned in the sixth as
Jeb Burkhart launched a two-run home run down the left-field line to score Silva. In the final frame, Gythfeldt doubled and was driven home by a Silva double, but the rally fell short. Burkhart and Silva both finished the game with two hits apiece.
