Utica, NY - The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team faced Utica University in the second day of the Utica Tournament. After 60 minutes of strong play, the Mules earned a 5-1 victory, with all different players scoring to close out the tournament weekend.
Colby hit the ice with intensity in the first period, controlling play early and generating numerous offensive chances. Despite several strong looks, the game remained scoreless until 15:12, when
Breanna Studley opened the scoring for the Mules, assisted by
Molly Lefebvre and
Megan Martodam. Goaltender
Grace Caligiuri held strong in net with three saves, keeping Utica off the board as Colby took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. The Mules continued their momentum into the second period. Just 2:36 in,
Courtney Schumacher doubled Colby's lead, with assists from
Maria Pierce and
Marion Legge. Colby capitalized on a power-play opportunity at 5:40, as Legge found the back of the net with assists from
Allie Corrieri and Studley to make it 3-0. Utica responded late in the period at 18:34 to cut the deficit to two, but the Mules maintained control heading into the third. Entering the final period, Colby wasted no time extending its lead. During a power play at 4:51, Lefebvre scored with assists from Studley and Corrieri. Just 42 seconds later, Martodam added another, assisted by Studley to make it a 5-1 game. The Mules stayed strong defensively for the remainder of the period. Studley led the Mules offensively with a goal and three assists, while Caligiuri finished with 15 total saves in net to help secure the 5-1 win.
The Mules will return to their home ice on Friday, January 9th, to face Hamilton at 7:00PM.
