Castine, Maine- The Colby Women's Basketball secured a win tonight over the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy 61-51. This win boosted Colby to an 11-5 record and Maine Maritime moved to 11-6 on the season.
The Mules started on the back end of the scoreboard tonight going into the second quarter down 16-13, but exploded in the second quarter dropping 24 points and holding Maine Maritime to only six. That gap and continuous hustle held Colby as the lead at the end of the game. The Mules made use of every opportunity with an overwhelming 26 points off turnovers and 13 fast break points. Colby was able to play strong in the paint with 28 points and outrebound the opponent. With 18 rebounds the Mules were able to score 12 second chance points. Kate Olenik led the team in rebounds with seven followed by Talia Thompson, Amelia Hanscom, and Lydia Mordarski all with six.
Olenik lit up the basket with a team high 32 points and showed up defensively with three steals. Those steals are tied for team high with Hanscom and Thompson. The lonesome block tonight came from Thompson who contributed an assist, three steals, and two points as well. The assist leader was Chelsea Ibenegbu with two who also snagged two steals. Caroline Hartley put up another two steals along with her six points and three rebounds. Brooke Braen added four more points, three rebounds, and an assist. Colby fought hard for four quarters and came out on top fueled by their newest win.
No need to wait long, for the Mules are back in action on January 24 in Waterville Maine against fellow in-state NESCAC Bowdoin.
