Springfield, Mass. - The Colby College Field Hockey team played at Western New England University on Sunday afternoon for an out of conference match up. The Mules fought hard and came out on top with a 2-1 win in a shootout after playing through a double overtime.
Colby and WNE both came out strong and fought a back and forth battle for the entirety of the game. In the first half the Mules earned five penalty corners and five shots on goal while not letting up any penalty corners or shots on goal, while the score remained 0-0. The game remained scoreless until the fourth quarter, with WNE scoring on their first offensive corner only a minute and a half in. The Mules answered back right away, earning a penalty corner just 20 second later. Off of the penalty corner, sophomore Christina Sweeny tallied her fifth goal of the season with an assist from senior captain
Catie McNulty. Colby earned six more penalty corners and took four more shots on goal in the remainder of the quarter, but regulation wasn't enough for these two teams.
The Mules and Bears battled for two ten-minute overtime periods, both earning offensive scoring opportunities, but the score still remained tied after 80 minutes of play. In the five-round shootout that followed, sophomores
Hadley Swenson and Sweeney both scored, while WNE only scored one of their rounds, giving the Mules a 2-1 shootout win. Sophomore goaltender
Opal O'Rourke recorded three saves throughout the game and stopped four out of five of the shootout attempts to keep Colby in the entire game.
Colby is back in action on Saturday at Williams at 11am.
