Colby Advances to Final Four Following Win Over Wesleyan

Waterville, Maine. - Colby defeated Wesleyan University today in the NCAA Quarterfinals in a tight 7-6 match. The Mules will now advance to the NCAA Semifinals.

Following the great defensive effort against Stevens yesterday, the Mules were geared up for a defensive game against Wesleyan today. Out of the gate, Wesleyan snuck the first goal of the game past Colby, but Colby responded with three goals. The score was 3-1 at the end of the first quarter. The first half of the second quarter was slow for both teams, with the first goal of the quarter coming in after almost eight minutes of play. Again, it was the Cardinals to make the first move and then Colby to respond. After some back and forth, the score was 5-3 at the half. If the second quarter was a defensive battle, then the third quarter would be a full-blown war. The only goal scored in the third was nearly ten minutes in by Colby. The score was 6-3 for the Mules heading into the fourth. The Mules scored relatively quickly by this game's standards, then it was the Cardinals' turn to push. Despite having three unanswered goals, two of which occurring within a minute of each other, Wesleyan was unable to close Colby's hard-won lead. The Mules came out on top with a final score of 7-6.

In addition to another standout defensive performance by goalkeeper Jillian Kane, defenders  Kate Munter, Gisele Uva, and Gretchen Biegel all had outstanding showings, each causing two, three, and two turnovers respectively. Colby's offensive contributions were evenly split by seven different players each scoring once: Stella Regan, Charlotte Michener, Zoey Verbesey, Ainsley Dion, Avery Del Col, Gennie Littlejohn, and Kins Helmer.

The Mules next face off against Middlebury College in the NCAA Semifinals on Friday, May 23, at 4:00 pm in Salem, VA.
