Strong pitching help propel softball to NESCAC doubleheader sweep of Bates

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College softball team picked up a pair of New England Small College Athletic Conference home wins over Bates College on Wednesday, pitching back-to-back shutouts en route to 2-0 and 2-0 wins. 

GAME ONE: Colby 2, Bates 0

Colby (14-19, 8-8 NESCAC) battled Bates (16-16, 7-9 NESCAC) scoreless through the first three innings of Wednesday's opening game before senior Emma Burnham busted the game open with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Mules added an insurance run in the sixth inning when freshman Julia Berry scored on an RBI single up the middle by junior Carissa Cassidy.

Junior KC DeSarno finished off her first career complete game shutout by retiring the Bobcats in order in the top of the seventh inning to secure the 2-0 victory.

DeSarno picked up her fourth win of the season after pitching seven complete innings, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.

Burnham, Cassidy and freshman Avery Lyman all record hits for the Mules in the victory.

GAME TWO: Colby 2, Bates 0

In Wednesday's finale, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Cassidy scored off a Bobcat throwing error.

Sophomore Caroline DeSimone later scored an insurance run off an RBI single to right field by sophomore Ella Wilcox for a 2-0 advantage in the sixth inning.

With a 2-0 lead, freshman Sophia Meade (3-4) kept the Bobcats off the board for the second-straight game, tossing seven complete innings, allowing seven hits and striking out a career-best 10 batters for her first career complete game shutout.

DeSimone, Cassidy, Wilcox all finished with two hits for Colby.

The Mules will now host Amherst College on Saturday for Senior Day with first scheduled for 12 and 2 p.m.
