Softball walks-off with sweep of Amherst on senior day

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College softball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday by sweeping Amherst College 9-0 and 4-3 in its regular-season finale.

Prior to game two, the Mules honored three seniors, including Erika MacLeod, Katelyn Hays and Colleen McAvoy.

GAME ONE: Colby 9, Amherst 0 (5 Innings)

The first two innings were a scoreless affair until the bottom of the third inning when Colby (16-19, 10-8 NESCAC) got on the board with four runs.

Senior Erika MacLeod led off with a walk, crossing the plate on a single from sophomore Caroline DeSimone, 1-0. DeSimone managed to steal home plate and make it 2-0 as junior Carissa Cassidy stole second. The risky effort repeated itself as Cassidy stole home plate to add a third run. Finally, sophomore Ella Wilcox hit a single to right field to score junior Victoria Ramirez, 4-0.

While the Amherst (17-18, 7-11 NESCAC) bats continued to struggle on offense, Colby produced a five-run fifth inning to close the contest on a mercy-rule decision. Cassidy hit a double to lead off the stanza with a run before two more runners crossed the plate on a fielding error. A closing home run from McAvoy tallied two more for the Mules and closed the game 9-0.

Cassidy went 3-3 with an RBI, two runs scored, a double and three stolen bases while DeSimone and Ramirez each had two hits.

Junior KC DeSarno picked up her fifth win of the season after pitching five complete innings, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Colby 4, Amherst 3

The Mammoths scored the game's opening run when their lead-off batter reached base on a bunt single that allowed her to race around the diamond off a Colby throwing error, 1-0.

The Mules equalized in the bottom of the first as a right-center double from Ramirez scored Cassidy, 1-1.

Amherst regained their lead in the top of the second, plating their second run of the game as a walk with bases loaded to take a 2-1 lead.

The contest was a back-and-forth rally until the bottom of the third, when Colby found their equalizer on a single up the middle from McAvoy, 2-2.

Amherst edged into the lead in the top of the fifth on an RBI double to left center, 3-2.

The Mules roared back during their final at-bat, scoring two runs with one out. DeSimone equalized the game on a double from Ramirez while a single down the left field line by sophomore Juliana Kiley made it 4-3, giving Colby a walk-off conclusion to the doubleheader.

Kiley recorded three hits while Ramirez and McAvoy each had two knocks in the victory.

Sophomore Ashley Correll got the start for the Mules, allowing two runs (one earned) off one hit in 1.2 innings. Freshman Sophia Meade (4-4) was credited with the victory after allowing one earned run off eight hits with three strikeouts in 5.1 innings in relief.

The Mules will head to the NESCAC Championship next, at Tufts University's Spicer Field when they take on the fifth seeded Panthers of Middlebury College at 9:30 a.m. on May 10.
