Softball splits NESCAC doubleheader with Wesleyan

BANGOR, Maine – The Colby College softball team earned a split in a New England Small College Athletic Conference doubleheader against Wesleyan College on Friday afternoon at the Colby Softball Field. The Mules won the opener 2-0 before falling to the Cardinals 10-1 in five innings in game two.

GAME ONE: Colby 2, Wesleyan 0

Colby (10-8, 4-2 NESCAC) kicked off the scoring with a run off one hit and a walk in the bottom of the first inning when junior Emma Burnham walked and later scored on a sophomore Ella Wilcox single up the middle.

The Mules added an insurance run in the bottom of the third inning when senior Erika MacLeod scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilcox.

Junior KC DeSarno and freshman Sophia Meade combined to toss a three-hit shutout on the afternoon with DeSarno earning her third win of season and Meade picking up her fourth save of the season to set a new program single-season record for saves.

Wilcox led the Mules offensively in the game one victory with two hits and two RBI.

GAME TWO: Wesleyan 10, Colby 1 (5 Innings)

Wesleyan (16-8, 6-4 NESCAC) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning with an RBI single up the middle before junior Carrissa Cassidy scored the tying run off a sacrifice fly by Wilcox in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Cardinals would then proceed to score nine runs in the top of the fifth inning to pick up the mercy-rule victory.

Meade took the loss after yielding six earned runs off nine hits with two strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Sophomore Ashley Correll allowed two unearned runs on two hits in 0.2 innings.

The Mules offense was held in check registering only three hits in game two, one each from Cassidy, senior Katelyn Hays and MacLeod.

Colby returns to action on Monday for an in-state doubleheader showdown with Husson University at 3 and 5 p.m.
