CLERMONT, Fla. - The Colby College softball team returned to action on Thursday falling 8-3 to Willamette University and 7-0 to No. 7 University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh heading into its final day at THE Spring Games.
GAME 1: Willamette 8, Colby 3
Willamette (11-7) struck first with three runs in the opening frame with a series of singles and a double steal. Colby (5-5) scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning on a two-run home run by sophomore
Caroline DeSimone and a single by junior
Victoria Ramirez to tie the score 3-3 after one inning.
The Bearcats threatened again in the top of the second inning but failed to score as junior
KC DeSarno got out of the bases load jam by striking the final two batters that she faced in the inning.
Willamette was able to break the tie in the third with a solo home run to left center that gave the Bearcats a 4-3 lead. The Bearcats added insurance runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh to make the final score 8-3.
DeSarno (1-1) took the loss after allowing four earned runs off seven hits in three innings with a season-high five strikeouts. Sophomore
Ashley Correll pitched four innings, yielding four runs (two earned) off seven hits with four strikeouts in relief of DeSarno
DeSimone led the Mules with three hits, two RBI and a home run, while junior
Carissa Cassidy, Ramirez and senior
Erika MacLeod each had two hits apiece on the day.
GAME 2: No. 7 UW-Oshkosh 7, Colby 0
University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh (16-2), ranked seventh in the nation by theÂ
National Fastpitch Coaches Association, opened the scoring in the first inning on a single and a double to make the score 3-0 after the first inning.
The Titans added two runs in the second and a run in the fourth to count for the 7-0 victory.
Kathryne Clay (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs off six hits in one inning. Freshman
Sophia Meade pitched the last five innings, striking out four.
Cassidy had two hits, and Ramirez added a double in top of second for the Mules in the setback.
Colby plays its final contests of THE Spring Games in Clermont on Friday. The Mules are scheduled to face Luther College (12-8) at 10:00 a.m. and Oberlin College at 2:30 p.m.
