Brunswick, Maine - The Colby Women's Basketball team is headed to the conference championship game after posting a commanding 90-69 win over No. 3 Trinity in the semifinal round. The two seeded Mules will face top seeded hosts Bowdoin for the NESCAC title tomorrow, March 2nd. The last and only time Colby played in the conference championship game was back in 2010 where they fell to Amherst 69-54.
The Mules offensive efficiency was evident against the Bantams leading the way from start to finish. Colby shot 54.5% from the field and 60% from three-point range including going six of six from deep in the second quarter. With 7:44 left in the final frame, the Mules held a colossal 30-point lead not allowing Trinity any time to overcome the deficit. In the end, Colby's offensive depth and defense, totaling 19 points off Bantam turnovers, were too much to overcome.
The standout player for the Mules was
Kate Olenik, who scored 31 points on 11-13 shooting on top of four steals, five rebounds and three assists.
Amelia Hanscom added 16 points as
Chelsea Ibenegbu (12) and
Lydia Mordarski (11) rounded out the double-digit scoring.
Tomorrows conference title game is schedule for a 12:00pm start right back in Brunswick. During the regular season Colby faced the Polar Bears twice coming up just short in both. 61-52 on December 7th in Waterville and 61-56 on January 25th at Bowdoin. The Mules will look to knock off the defending NESCAC champs who are currently ranked second in all of Division III with an undefeated 26-0 record.
