Brunswick, Maine - The Colby College Women's Basketball team fought hard in a neck and neck battle with the top seeded and undefeated Bowdoin Polar Bears in the conference championship game but came up just short 62-59.
The first quarter was played tight with the largest lead only being a mere four points. To start the second, Ana Von Rumohr hit a triple followed by a steal from Lydia Mordarski and a layup from Amelia Hanscom to give the Mules an eight point cushion. Bowdoin pushed back in the third quarter taking a one point lead of their own at the seven minute mark before Colby stretched out to a 10-point lead late in the frame, their biggest of the game. The Mules took advantage of the Polar Bears' offensive struggles, forcing turnovers and converting them into 18 points. However, Colby could not maintain the advantage in the final moments of play as Bowdoin took the win.
Although the Mules out shot the Polar Bears from the field (47.8% to 43.3%) and from beyond the arc (36.8% to 22.2%), Bowdoin capitalized on its second-chance opportunities, scoring 11 points off offensive rebounds.
Mordarski led the charge for Colby, finishing with 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting. The junior guard also contributed two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 39 minutes of action. Kate Olenik and Von Rumohr also had solid performances, combining for 22 points. Olenik was a perfect 5-of-5 from the free-throw line and added seven rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Von Rumohr was steady throughout including three 3-pointers and six rebounds.
Despite the loss, the Mules showed resilience throughout the game and demonstrated how they could challenge the second best Division III ranked Women's Basketball team.
