Box Score New London, CT - The Colby Women's Tennis team played their first dual match of the 2024-25 season, taking on Connecticut College on the road. Following a dominant win against Conn last season, the Mules looked to continue their success against the Camels this year.
Right from the opening serve, the dual match was a battle. Junior captain Amelie Gal and first-year Ella Novion set the tone first with a confident 6-3 win against their Conn opponents at the #3 position. After Colby dropped the #1 position to the Camels in a tight 5-7 battle, the all-important doubles point came down to the #2 spot. Sophomore Jade Finestone and first-year Waka Aida found themselves down 1-5 and on the brink of defeat, but with incredible determination and grit, the pair came back, winning the next six games and clinching the doubles point 7-5.
Novion was the first to finish her singles match, winning in commanding fashion 6-1, 6-0 at the #3 position. Aida then followed Novion with a straight sets win of her own, defeating her Conn opponent 6-1, 6-4 at the #4 slot. The Camels then matched the Mules with two wins of their own at the #1 and #5 positions. Junior captain Amelie Gal found herself with a chance to seal the match at the #6 spot, as Colby was up 3-2 heading into the last two singles matches. After winning the first set in dominant fashion, Gal found herself in a back-and-forth second set, serving for the match multiple times. Showing great mental strength, the junior closed out the match and gave the Mules their first NESCAC win of the season, winning 6-3, 7-6 (5). After five hours and thirty minutes, Colby ultimately defeated the Camels by a score of 4-3.
The Mules will look to continue their momentum into next weekend, where they will take on two NESCAC foes in Trinity and Wesleyan.Â
