Waterville, Maine - The #1 ranked team in the country is really good. The Mules hosted Wesleyan this afternoon on Senior Night and although Colby looked like they should've been in that top spot for the first few minutes, the Cardinals pulled away for a resounding 91-64 win. The loss drops the Mules to 13-11 overall and 4-6 in NESCAC conference play to end the regular season, while Wesleyan remains undefeated.
For the first five minutes, Colby had the momentum, going up 8-0 off two threes from Max Poulton and senior Ben Kaczmarek who assisted the other in the process. The other fourth-year, Jack Lawson, fought to the rim to take the Mules up 8, and after a quick comeback from Weseylan, Kaczmarek buried his second triple taking Colby back up 4. Although the Cardinals started to find their momentum, the Mules hung around for a bit, Sam Hinman knocked down a three to tie the game a few minutes later, while Dan Civello had 4 straight points to draw Colby within 1 midway through the half. Both teams played great but Wesleyan's efficiency from three saw them pull away, taking the Mules into half down 28-44.
The second half didn't start as well for Colby, going down by almost 40 with ten minutes left. However, the bench players who came on were a bright spark, specifically Jack Gatjanis who looked comfortable en route to a career-high 13-point game, only ousted by his fellow first-year Civello for most of the night. The freshman had an instant impact, knocking down a deep jumper to give the Mules some life. Gatjanis also showed his versatility, shooting 2-4 from beyond the arc and grabbing four rebounds and a steal on the night. In the end, Colby had positive takeaways from a tough game against an even tougher opponent–something they can look forward to heading into the NESCAC tournament.
The Mules are back in action next Saturday, February 22nd as they head to Hartford, Connecticut to take on the 2-seed Trinity in the first round of the NESCAC tournament.
