Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Aidan Simmonds

Mules Bow Out of NESCAC Tournament to Trinity

Hartford, Connecticut - After a long, rewarding season, the Colby Men's Basketball season has come to a close. After making the NESCAC Tournament as the 7 seed, the Mules faced the 2-seed and nationally ranked Trinity in the first round and fell to the Bantams 56-77. Colby ends the season with a 13-12 record overall and 4-6 in NESCAC conference play.

Marcos Montiel opened the scoring with a three-pointer to start the game, but from then on Trinity held the lead. Trinity's NESCAC-best defense limited the Mules--who have the highest scoring offense in the conference of 79.6ppg--to their lowest-scoring game of the season. Defensively, they forced 15 turnovers to Colby's 12–which in retrospect doesn't make a big difference on paper but the Bantams had 12 points off turnovers compared to 0 from the Mules. From beyond the arc, Sam Hinman had a strong night, converting on 3 for 7 with a dagger at the start of the second half to give Colby momentum. Compared to Trinity's 25%, the Mules shot 55% from three in the second half with the majority coming during transition or on fastbreaks. However, the controlled pace of Trinity offensively allowed them to get open looks in the paint.

This season has highlighted the potential of a young group, who although is losing two crucial seniors in Jack Lawson and Ben Kaczmarek, has shown promise for the future. Weeks of playing games on the road and a tough schedule made it difficult for Colby to win games but it has provided them with incredible experience that will only translate positively into next season.
