Poulton Hits 1,000 Points as Colby Beats Bowdoin

Brunswick, Maine - Like against Bates, Colby won when it mattered most. In their second outing against Bowdoin this year, the Mules saved their win for the NESCAC matchup, beating the Polar Bears 70-57 on a special night as junior Max Poulton surpassed 1,000 career points. Their record now stands at 12-6 overall, and 3-1 in NESCAC conference play.

The game started like any other rivalry matchup as both teams grappled for the lead in a back-and-forth first half. Marcos Montiel had a go-ahead three-pointer in what seemed like a shift in momentum but Bowdoin responded immediately. The sophomore registered 12 points in the half, burying shots from all areas of the court, and grabbed three rebounds in the process. His fellow guard, Savion Stroud, had four rebounds and combined with Montiel for the last ten points of the half, giving Colby a 29-25 lead heading into the break.

The start of the second half started to look eerily similar to the first, as Bowdoin crawled right back and took a small lead. However, a go-ahead jumper and subsequent three-pointer from Dan Civello put Colby ahead and kept them there. Stroud and Civello spurred the Mules into an 11-1 run, giving them their first double-digit lead. Bowdoin never went away but Colby's strong percentage from beyond the arc and consistency on defense kept the Polar Bears at bay. With the game winding down, Poulton who didn't have a point on the night, got an easy layup to set himself up for a three-pointer to hit the coveted four-digit number and with the game winding down he did just that. At the buzzer, the senior buried a triple, breaking a big milestone and putting a massive emphasis on Colby's win.

The Mules are back in action on Friday, January 31st, hosting Amherst in another NESCAC conference matchup.
