Waterville, Maine - The Mules just added another item to their multifaceted bag of tricks: the clutch factor. Tonight, said 'clutch factor' took over late in the second half to force overtime, and continued to work as Colby defeated Amehrst in the added five minutes. This win takes the Mules to 13-6 overall and 4-1 in NESCAC conference play.
Colby trailed the whole game except for the first two minutes where Max Poulton gave the Mules a four-point lead. Although they fell behind, Colby continued to stay in the game, credit to Poulton's 12-point first half. The junior was everywhere, scoring from beyond the arc and grabbing rebounds down low. Coming off the bench, Dan Civello and Sam Hinman also had strong starts, each putting up 8 points. Civello had two blocks and three-pointers while Hinman buried two triples of his own. Civello's last three-pointer took Colby into the half trailing 30-35.
The second half mirrored the first as the Mules went from a 3-point deficit to 13, and then back to 3. A triple from Marcos Montiel brought Colby within one possession with 5 minutes to go and minutes later got to the lane to pull the Mules within one. The sophomore had an electric last few minutes, getting sent to the line with 50 seconds to go and making both free throws to pull Colby within 3. After a turnover from Amherst on the next possession, Montiel brought the ball down and found Civello for 3 to tie the game, sending the game to overtime. The momentum from the end of the game carried over as Poulton and Savion Stroud got Colby out to an early lead, but Hinman but the Mammoths away with a late three-pointer and two free-throws to pull the Mules out of reach in the waning minutes.
Colby is back in action tomorrow, hosting Hamilton in another NESCAC conference matchup at 3 pm.Â
