Defense shines bright in Hockey's 3-2 win over Amherst

Waterville, ME - The Colby College Mules (9-2-1, 4-2-0) defeated the Amherst College Mammoths (5-5-1, 2-3-1) in their Friday night matchup.

The first period was action-packed. Just one minute into the first period, Tyler Crist scored unassisted. Amherst scored at the 12:17 and 13:52 mark to make the score 2-1. However, Matthew MacDonald scored at the 17:01 mark to even the score. Derek Hessinger assisted MacDonald on the play.

Although the second frame saw no goals, the energy remained high. Jake MacDonald was sent to the box late in the period for roughing. While the Mammoths had the man advantage, Cooper Rautenstrauch put his body on the line, diving for saves, and the Colby defense helped out their goaltender by saving several successive shots.

The third frame saw its first goal at the 5:38 mark. Dan Juzych was sent to the box, but J. Macdonald scored a shorthanded goal to put the Mules up 3-2. Max Abene and Max O'Brien provided assists on the goal. Amherst fought back, but Colby held off the Mammoths.

Rautenstrauch saved 33 shots and Colby won 43 of the 76 faceoffs.

The Mules will return to action on Saturday, January 11 at 3:00 PM when they take on the #8 Hamilton College Continentals at 3:00 PM in Waterville, Maine.
