Lewiston, Maine - The Colby College Softball team played a double-header today against Bates College where they fell just short in an incredibly close first game with a score of 4-5 but then proceeded to take a 7-0 sweep in the second game. This brings the Mules to a season record of 15-15 and the Bobcats to 8-17.
Game 1:
- Colby had a great comeback in the third inning, starting with Carissa Cassidy flying out to right field. Grace Gouin singled through the left side, followed by Chloe Wilcox hitting an amazing home run to right field which allowed Gouin to score. Next, Courtney Schumacher popped up to the second baseman and Victorian Ramirez singled down the left field line. The inning concluded with Emma Burnham also popping up to the second baseman.
- The Mules continued to thrive in the sixth inning. Ramirez first flied out to center field followed by Burnham walking to first. Ella Wilcox then singled through the left side and Caroline DeSimone pinch ran for E. Wilcox. Juliana Kiley and Kelsey Sullivan both walked to first and Burnham scored. Lastly, Cassidy singled to left field and then advanced to second on the throw, and DeSimone scored.
- In the seventh and final inning, Gouin flied out to left field, followed by C. Wilcox singling to left center. Schumacher then flied out to right field and Ramirez to left field.
- Ashley Correll and Payton Crowley both pitched this game. Correll had a total of 82 pitches and three strikeouts while Crowley had 19 pitches and one strikeout.
Game 2:
- This was an incredible game, as the score was 0-0 until the fifth inning and Colby got a whopping six runs in the last inning. In the fifth, Burnham doubled down the left field line and E. Wilcox grounded out to the pitcher. Kiley then reached first on a fielding error and Burnham proceeded to score. Finally, Sullivan grounded out to the third baseman.
- During the sixth inning, Ayston Asadoorian singled up the middle and then proceeded to advance to second on a wild pitch. Schumacher walked to first and then stole second, followed by Ramirez grounding out to shortstop.
- To start off the seventh inning, Burnham singled through the left side and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. E. Wilcox walked to first, and Lauren Ilano pinch ran for her. Sullivan singled to left field, allowing Burnham to score. Cassidy then bunted to the catcher, followed by Asadoorian singling through the left side which allowed Ilano to score. Next, C. Wilcox hit a remarkable home run to center field which resulted in Asadoorian, Cassidy, and Sullivan all scoring. Lastly, Schumacher grounded out to shortstop and Ramirez grounded out to the third baseman.
- Abby Orso pitched in all seven innings with a total of 99 pitches and four strikeouts.
The Mules will play their last home game of the season Saturday, April 27th against Tufts University at 2:00pm and again at 4:00pm.
