Waterville, Maine - The Colby Baseball team came back from two runs down in the sixth and moved in front in the seventh Wednesday against the University of Southern Maine to secure their second straight victory to start the 2024 campaign.
Facing a USM squad that has owned the matchup of the Mules dating back to 2001 (22 Husky wins out of 25 games), the visiting Huskies opened the scoring in the top of the second inning off a solo home run. The Mules tied it up in the bottom of the fourth when first-year
Patrick Shrake collected his first collegiate RBI, driving in
Noah Reichman. USM jumped back in front in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run single. The lead was quickly erased in the bottom of the sixth when
Tony Silva scored
Patrick McConnell with a double to center and
Clint Flippo reached on error, plating
Carson Frame.
The drama continued in the bottom of the seventh when
Cole Palmeri (hit by pitch) and
Brady O'Brien (walk) reached base in front of Reichman's double deep to right field, clearing the bases and setting up the Mules for a 5-3 victory.
Six different pitchers toed the mound for Colby.
Matthew Scibilio earned the victory with 3.2 innings pitched in relief. The senior struck out 10 of the 15 batters he faced, allowing only two hits.
Colby is back in action Saturday when they travel to Endicott to face the second-ranked Gulls for a double header.
