Waterville, Maine - Records are made to be broken, so the saying goes. From under the lights in packed arenas to rainy nights in small college towns, records often can't withstand the test of the following generations. For Colby it was the latter, as they put 30 goals past Maine Maritime Academy on this wet Tuesday night–breaking the single game goal tally for Colby Men's Lacrosse.
A 30-5 win takes the Mules to 4-3 on the season–they remain 1-3 in NESCAC conference play. Bouncing back from a tough loss to Hamilton on the weekend, Colby emphatically downed their in-state foes as 16 different goal scorers contributed 30 goals.
The first quarter started like any other as Bennett Goller shot the Mules into an early lead. However, the goals just kept coming. To list them all would be verbose but it is noteworthy to acknowledge some. Colby's large lead allowed them to rotate the squad leading to debut goals. Will Bainbridge, Isaac Kante, and Chris Maichin all had a night to remember as they tallied their first goal of the season. Zac Landon grabbed his second of the year in the fourth quarter and somehow squeezed in two more to make it a hat trick in less than ten minutes. Gavin Rothenberg continued to have a standout year as he added four of his own, all in the span of eight minutes. Rothenberg is now tied with Goller(3 goals today) and Doug McCarthy(2) with 14 goals this season, averaging two a game.
This huge team win was vital to turn the momentum around heading into one of the toughest games of the season. This Saturday, Colby heads down to Medford, Massachusetts to take on Tufts in yet another difficult NESCAC matchup.
