Medford, Massachusetts - What. A. Game. Going down to the wire against the #3 ranked team in the nation, Colby would come up short but they sure made it close. The Mules fell 13-17 against Tufts, a team that has been dominant in Men's Lacrosse for years, even regarded as a possible Division I caliber team. The loss takes the Mules to 4-4 overall and 1-4 in NESCAC conference play–the Jumbos remain undefeated in NESCAC games.
The first quarter was all Colby's. Correction: all Gavin Rothenberg's. The team's leading scorer not only had another hat trick but did it in the first quarter. Rothenberg torched Tufts' defense from the right side, even setting teammates Bennett Goller and Doug McCarthy up for two assists. The Mules led 4-3 heading into the second but then broke down defensively. Although both teams registered the same number of shots, Tufts converted and took a 10-7 lead into half–Rothenberg had two goals while Goller scored the third.
Coming out of the break Tufts' offense didn't let up. Doug McCarthy and Cormac O'Neill were the only Mules to find the back of the net but were overshadowed by five goals from the Jumbos. Heading into the final quarter Colby needed to flip a switch to pull level. McCarthy netted his third of the game and O'Neill his second but two goals on the other end canceled out their efforts. Ben Reynolds got on the scoresheet twice to end the game to draw Colby within four but it wasn't enough. Will Heisler had a tough job between the sticks today but managed 17 saves.
Today was tough considering Tufts is a well-drilled lacrosse team. With that being said, Colby's performance is a huge step in the right direction and shows that they can compete with anyone in their conference. This Wednesday they host MIT at 7:00 pm, looking for a win before another tough streak of NESCAC games.
