Amherst, Massachusetts - Famous Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu once said "know yourself and you will win all battles." Under new coaching, the new era of Colby Men's Lacrosse is still trying to find their identity and enduring losses is part of that. Looking for their second consecutive NESCAC conference win, the Mules headed down south to face Amherst but fell short, 7-12. Colby is now 2-2 overall(1-2 in the NESCAC) while Amherst rises to 4-1(2-1).Â
A trend is starting to develop in these games where the Mules start off on the back foot. It hasn't been an issue since they have strong second half performances, but it continued against Amherst. Colby found the back of the net once the whole half as Max Solmssen found Doug McCarthy for their opener. On the defensive end the Mules had all hands on deck. Amherst put 5 past Colby's defense but compared to their 23 shots faced in the half and previous score lines this season, allowing five first half goals was not the end of the world for the Mules, trailing 5-1 heading into the break.
Forgetting the first half score line, the Mules only would have lost by one as they went toe to toe with Amherst. McCarthy opened the second half scoring for his second goal of the game followed up quickly by Bennett Gollers' first. Amherst responded with three of their own as they continued to dominate the offensive front, outscoring the Mules 14-4 in shots. The fourth quarter was evenly split as both teams put four on the board–Amherst got on the board first, preventing a possible comeback as they went by 6. But Colby fought until the end as Solmssen scored two, Goller grabbed his second, and Brendan Reilly got on the board for Colby's sixth.Â
The Mules are back in action this Wednesday as they visit Saint Joseph's College of Maine for a non-conference matchup.
