Waterville, Maine - The sixth-ranked Colby Women's Lacrosse team faced off today against 19th seed Amherst, falling to the Mammoths with a final score of 9-8. The Mules' record is now 3-1 on the season, 2-1 in conference.
The first quarter saw a lot of action with three goals scored by each team, setting up what would be a fight to the finish for these NESCAC teams. This momentum carried on to the second quarter where each team scored two goals, bringing the score at the end of the first half to 5-5. Defense picked it up in the third quarter with only one goal scored for each team, the third quarter score staying tight at 6-6. The Mammoths pulled ahead in the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals in the span of two minutes, but the Mules were far from done fighting. Unfortunately, the two goals Colby scored in the last two minutes of the game were not quite enough to secure a victory, and the Mules fell to the Mammoths 9-8.
The Mules demonstrated a diverse skill set today with notable performances by a number of players. While Amherst's Clara Sosa was the only player to score a hat trick, Colby's
Ally Franz,
Julia Maimonis,
Tate Ban, and
Julia Jardina each contributed to two goals. Jardina also had an impressive six draw controls, followed closely by
Ainsley Dion's four.
The Mules will face off at home against Roger Williams University in a non-conference match-up tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
