Softball Opens 2024 Campaign With Sweep of Terriers

Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Softball team opened the 2024 season Thursday with 3-2 and 10-4 victories over Thomas College, sweeping the Terriers for the third consecutive year.  Colby is now 6-2 against Thomas under head coach Terren Allen.  The Mules start the season 2-0, playing a pair of key games before embarking on their annual spring break trip in just over a week.  

Game 1 Key Takeaways: 
  • Thomas scored first in the opening inning, plating a run with an RBI single off Colby starter Ashley Correll.  The score was the only run the first-year would allow, hurling three innings and striking out five. 
  • The Mules answered back in the bottom of the first with a Juliana Kiley single, scoring Carissa Cassidy and Emma Burnham.  
  • The Terriers tied the game in the top of the fourth off reliever Abby Orso, manufacturing the score with a single, two sacrifice bunts, and a Colby error.  
  • Colby regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when Kiley scored off a Liv Menyo single. 
  • Orso earned the win in the circle throwing four innings while scattering four hits and allowing zero earned runs.

  • The visiting Terriers loaded the bases in the top of the first inning and scored two quick runs for an early lead.  
  • Colby responded with two runs in the bottom of the first and four runs in the second highlighted by a Chloe Wilcox 2RBI single.   
  • Three more runs crossed the plate in the fourth, two off the bat of a Colleen McAvoy double. 
  • Thomas was able to chip away with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth, but Courtney Schumacher put an exclamation point on her 4-4 game with a solo shot to center in th bottom of the 6th. 
  • Payton Crowley earned the win in the circle, throwing four innings, striking out four while allowing four hits and two earned runs.  
11 different Mules combined for 21 hits across the twin bill. First-years Kiley, Justice Tiberi, and Ella Wilcox recorded their first collegiate hit, and Schumacher and 2023 All-NESCAC selection Cassidy led the way with four apiece.  

The Mules are back in action on Saturday, March 23rd to open their 12-game spring trip in Florida.
