Softball Lands in Sunshine State with Two Tough Matchups

Clermont, Florida - The Colby Softball team opened their 12-game southern trip with two tough opponents.  Both games were decided late, but the Mules fell to Wisconsin-Whitewater 3-2 in eight innings and Elmhurst University 9-7 in game two.  Wisconsin-Whitewater remained undefeated on the season, and Elmhurst moved to 3-0 against NESCAC squads with Tufts on tap for Sunday.

Game 1:
  • Abby Orso pitched a gem in the 9:00 AM game against the Warhawks, firing 139 pitches across 7.2 innings.  She allowed one earned run with a season-high 10 strikeouts, and worked out of trouble on multiple occasions.
  • The Mules got on the board in the top of the first when Emma Burnham walked, then stole second and third, and later scored on a Warhawk misplay.
  • Wisconsin-Whitewater tied the game in the fourth with a one-out RBI double to put runners on second and third.  Orso pitched out of the jam with a strikeout and a popup to the mound.
  • Colby's four hits were collected by Orso who had a double in the second, Carissa Cassidy, Ayston Asadoorian, and Courtney Schumacher who knocked in Colby's run in the top of the 8th to take a 2-1 lead.
  • With the extra runner placed at second in the bottom of the 8th and down by a run, Auburn Roberson sent a two-out double down the line in right to score the tying and go-ahead runs.  She had struck out in her two previous at-bats.
Game 2:
  • The Blue Jays jumped ahead with three runs in the top of the first, but Colby matched in their half with runs by Cassidy, Schumacher, and Chloe Wilcox
  • Elmhurst tallied three in the second and two in the third to take an 8-3 lead.  The Mules captured two runs of their own in the third and another in the fourth to cut the deficit to two runs. Ella Wilcox collected her first collegiate double going 2-3 at the plate with a walk and an RBI.
  • The Blue Jays and Mules traded runs in the final innings, and Elmhurst was able to close the door with the tying run for Colby at the plate.
  • Schumacher led the way with three hits for the Mules while Cassidy and Ella Wilcox had two apiece.
  • Ashley Correll pitched well in relief, throwing 4.0 innings while allowing one run and scattering four hits.
The Mules are back in action Sunday facing Knox College at 10:00 AM and #17 MIT at 12:15 in Game 2.
