Middletown, Conn. - The Colby College Women's Ice Hockey team traveled to Wesleyan University for a match-up against the Cardinals. Colby topped Wesleyan with a 3-1 win to start off the weekend.
The opening period saw both teams generating quality scoring chances, but strong defensive play kept the scoreboard empty. Colby came close to capitalizing with a five-on-three power play but couldn't break through the Cardinals. Colby was ready to take action in the second period, and the Mules found their stride early. Just two minutes in, Anna Staton answered with a power play goal in the second minute, assisted by Maria Pierce. Six minutes later, the Mules had another power play, and Brianna Studley doubled their lead, scoring the Mules' second goal of the game assisted by Cailyn Murphy. With the Mules still hungry for more, 41 seconds later Studley scored her second goal of the game, giving the Mules a 3-0 lead. Wesleyan responded with a goal late in the second period to make it 3-1, but Colby's defense held firm the rest of the way. Paige Bolyard turned away all 14 shots from the Cardinals in the third period, securing the win 3-1 for the Mules.
The Mules will head to Hartford to face the Bantams of Trinity College tomorrow afternoon.
