Men's Ice Hockey stays hot, defeats USM 5-3

Gorham, ME - The Colby College Mules (5-1-1, 2-1-0) defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies (2-5-0, 0-4-0) by a score of 5-3 in their Tuesday evening matchup. The Mules move to 26-14-6 all-time against the Huskies.

The first frame started with a bang for the Mules. Massimo Gentile capitalized on a power play opportunity with just 2:43 elapsed in the first period. Will Soloway and Connor Gallagher assisted Gentile for his fourth goal of his stellar freshman season. Just two minutes later, Colby advanced to a two-goal lead when Reese Farrell found the back of the net. Soloway again provided an assist. The Mules kept pounding away until 18:37, when Jayden Grier and Nick Stapleton assisted Jake MacDonald to make the game 3-0.

In the second period, both teams wore away at each other. The Huskies scored at the 3:19 mark to make the score 3-1. Gentile recieved a two-minute minor for tripping at the 12:33 mark, and USM was able to capitalize on the 5-on-4 advantage and scored in the closing seconds of their advantage. However, Colby responded with a goal at the 14:51 mark - Tyler Crist scored via an assist from Gentile.

The third frame remained action-packed for both teams, as USM scored with just 1:24 elapsed to cut Colby's advantage to just one goal. The next 18 minutes were grueling for both teams, with no goals or penalties occuring. The Huskies pulled their goalie late in the third, but Stapleton was able to score an empty-net goal with one second remaining to cap the 5-3 win for Colby.

Colby won the puck drops, 38 to 23, and Edward Baliotti saved 27 shots from USM.

Colby will return to action on Friday, December 6 at 7:00 PM when the Tufts University Jumbos travel to Waterville.
